International Know-How and Diplomacy Bring Holland Village to New York

What does it take to move a life-size windmill, 12 traditional Dutch houses and a greenhouse, plus authentic Dutch cheeses, treats, crafts, artwork and more from the Netherlands to New York and then back again? It requires international cooperation and the professional services of Phoenix International Business Logistics, Inc. (PIBL).

In celebration of NY400 Holland on the Hudson, the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality brought a representation of a Dutch village, called New Amsterdam Village, to New York’s Bowling Green Park for a special weeklong exhibit. To get the village’s buildings and supplies to New York, the Netherlands called on PIBL to arrange customs clearance under diplomatic status, and arrange for transportation and grounding of the containers. “We worked very closely with the Netherlands Embassy in Washington, D.C. to ensure all of the containers used to transport the exhibit were received, cleared by customs and delivered on time,” says Phil Hobson, President, PIBL.

The containers for the international exhibit arrived at midnight on September 4. PIBL was on site until 4 am to ensure the delivery went off without a hitch. On September 16, PIBL provided the same services for the safe, on-time return of New Amsterdam Village.

The international exhibit was part of the celebration of New York’s Dutch history. It was 400 years ago that Henry Hudson discovered the land that is now known as New York City. To see just some of what New Amsterdam Village offered visitors, click here.
